The Montgomery County Council Transportation and Environment Committee unanimously voted on January 30, 2025 to approve the updated BEPS regulations. These regulations will require buildings 25,000 sq ft and larger to become more energy efficient over the next 10 years. There are multiple paths for buildings to comply with the regulations. These buildings are responsible for 25% of the greenhouse gas emissions in the County. These regulations represent one of the primary actions the county can take to meet its Climate Action Plan goals of 80% reduction by 2027 and 100% by 2035.

For the regulations to be implemented, the full Council now needs to vote on them by the end of February, 2025. County work sessions are scheduled for February 11 and 25.
